Overview

Implemented by Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry in 2019, the year-round program is for youth ages 5 to 7 years old to inspire them to develop a sustained interest in reading and math.

"Our focus is to help teach our young children to love reading and learning," said Henry. "By having a fun place kids can go to weekly, and positive interactions with people who are dedicated to improving their literacy skills, we are working toward improving the lives of those in our community now and in the years to come."

Meetings

The Mayor’s Literacy Initiative meets from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at the city’s Yvonne Scarlett-Golden Cultural & Educational Center, located at 1000 Vine St. in Daytona Beach.

They also meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday as part of the Ortona Elementary After-school Program at 1206 N. Halifax Ave. in Daytona Beach.

Volunteers Needed

The program is looking for volunteers to participate in the weekly sessions and read to children. If you’re interested and for more information, please call (386) 671-3401.
