The tragic death of George Floyd in Minneapolis while in the custody of police officers has understandably generated significant outrage across the nation, including within our own communities. That fateful incident on May 25, 2020 has appalled and offended our citizens and our police officers.

The Volusia and Flagler Counties Chiefs of Police Association believes that the actions taken by a few officers in Minneapolis that day are contrary to our beliefs and mission.

We stand with the Florida Chiefs of Police Association and our communities in condemning the murder of George Floyd and support the speedy trial of the officers responsible for this unnecessary and preventable event.

We hear the protestors call for police accountability and transparency, reviews of policing policies and practices and the elimination of bias policing. As an organization of police professionals, we are committed to working with our communities in moving forward constructively.

Members of our organization will actively participate in a subcommittee newly created by the Florida Chiefs of Police to identify effective solutions to these issues.

Together, we can build a future that ensures fairness, dignity, justice and, most importantly, respect for all.
